As an update to my previous post:

although wanting to read the canon this time round without annotations, I quickly looked up CHAS in the Annotated and found a yet further crime committed by the 'heroes' of the story:

Battery
Watson says of their escape: "I felt the hand of the man behind me grab at my ankle; but I kicked myself free". We later learn this was the under-gardener of Appledore Towers, an entirely innocent man; and very aggrieved he must surely have felt at being kicked (assaulted!) by the fleeing Dr Watson!

Now that I've finished the Penguin Modern Classics omnibus 'Quantum of Solace ' I can now say I have read every James Bond story (by Ian Fleming). In some ways the last story proper 'The Living Daylights' is a case of saving the best for last. But it's not just one of the best-written Bond tales - it's one of the most realistic in the way it compresses the danger and excitement of Bond's job role into a few short, tense moments surrounded by hour after hour of boredom. Arriving in Berlin to act as sniper-cover for an escaping agent, Bond is told this agent's window for escape is between 6-7pm on one of three consecutive nights. a whimsical little Christmas event

Pull on your Scotch bonnett and tuck that goose under your arm - it's nearly Christmas and that means a trudge through the December sleet and snow in pursuit of The Blue Carbuncle ! * Being the season of goodwill to all men, the Christmas setting seems to have rubbed off on Doyle as much as on Holmes, for we have a story filled with heart-warming characters - such as the (very honest) Commissionaire, good old Henry Baker (gratefully the recipient of a replacement goose) and a jolly publican - and most of these experience unexpected good fortune, even with the villain, most famously, being let off the hook. Henry Baker may be described by Holmes as having lost the love of his wife but this seems an exaggeration when one pictures them tucking in together to their delicious fresh goose. (Holmes' 'deductions' have drawn ample criticism over the years so perhaps we don't have to take his comments on the hapless Mr Baker too seriously) And of course there are the mental ...

the criminal Sherlock Holmes!

One of the reasons I rebel against the strict rules of 'the Great Game' these days is that there are a great many instances in the Holmes stories of Watson laying various people (including himself) open to charges of serious breaches of the law, such that if they were indeed genuine historical records would have seen the stories' characters most likely flung in jail. Doyle wrote a good deal of biographical prose but never at any point did he casually reveal that he let a murderer go free or that he did a spot of breaking & entering on occasion. Sherlock Holmes himself, perhaps surprisingly, comes off the worst in this regard - and it is something of a surprise to say the least that the world's foremost exponent of criminal detection puts his foot in it a great many times.
